UW Health Physician Leads National Transplant Organization
MADISON - Dr. Maryl Johnson, medical director of the heart failure and transplantation program at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, has been inducted as president of the American Society of Transplantation, (AST).AST is an international organization of transplant professionals who are dedicated to research, education, advocacy and patient care in transplant science and medicine. It includes more than 3,000 transplant physicians, surgeons, scientists and allied health professionals.
Johnson joined th
e University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health faculty as professor of medicine and medical director of heart transplant and transplantation. A native of Iowa, she received her medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, where she also completed post-graduate training in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases.
She joined the faculty at Iowa, where she helped establish a cardiac transplant program and later served as its medical director.
Johnson has also held leadership positions in cardiac transplant at Loyola, Rush and Northwestern Memorial in Chicago. Her entire career has been devoted to the treatment of patients with heart failure and those who receive heart transplants.
She has been on the AST board since May 2004 and has chaired and served on numerous committees. She is also past chair of the United Network for Organ Sharing Thoracic Organ Transplantation Committee.
